40 feared drowned as boat capsizes in Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh

Twenty boats, expert swimmers and NDRF teams have been pressed into service to trace the missing people.

The rescue operation is being carried out jointly by National Disaster Response Force, State Disaster Response Force and Eastern Naval Command.

"Anguished by the capsizing of a boat in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district. When the boat is nearly 10 minutes away to the banks, heavy rain and wind occurred, the boat lost balance and slid one side".

Khaja, who operates the boat, surrendered before Devipatnam police. "The river is very narrow now and not very deep, so if the boat had a problem the boat driver could have reached the river bank within five minutes".

According to Reddy, the driver of the boat has said there are 25-26 passengers in the boat at the time of the incident.

PM Modi tweeted about the incident expressing anguish.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister (Home) N China Rajappa took stock of the situation. The launch was carrying at least 40 tribals returning from a weekly market and capsized in between Devipatnam and Varapalli areas in East Godavari district. Condolences to the bereaved families.
