WATCH Opening Ceremony of Crimean Bridge in Russian Federation

Russian state television showed Putin behind the wheel of a construction truck with workers on the almost 20-kilometer drive across the bridge, which aims to integrate Crimea with Russia's transportation network.

The Crimean bridge stands nearly complete.

Because of blocks imposed by Kiev, in addition to Western sanctions, a large amount of food is now shipped to the peninsula from Russian Federation, so the bridge will play an important role in reducing the region's reliance on sea transport.

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its strong protest against the launch of the bridge across the Kerch Strait by Russian Federation in occupied Crimea and once again stressed that the construction of this facility without the consent of Ukraine is unlawful. The Crimean Bridge overtakes Lisbon's Vasco da Gama Bridge as the longest in Europe.

The construction of the bridge began in May 2015.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's security service raided the offices of Russian state media in Kiev and detained one local journalist on suspicions of treason, moves the chief editor of Russia's RT television suggested were linked to the bridge opening.

The Ukrainian side has withdrawn from the treaty with Russian Federation on the construction of the bridge in 2014 after the annexation of Crimea.

Another unsuccessful attempt was made in the 1930s under Joseph Stalin. The rail section is expected to be completed at the end of 2019.

The Kerch Strait Bridge will open to cars and public transport on Wednesday, May 16.
