'Mild Hybrid' Kia Sportage due later this year

Kia is preparing to electrify its Sportage with the introduction of a 48V mild-hybrid version of the SUV set to be launched later this year.

Kia has announced that it'll launch an all-new mild hybrid powertrain.

According to its creators the mild-hybrid technology offers advantages over full hybrid units, particularly in the performance generated for the cost.

Kia hasn't released any specs yet, but says that the 48V battery will be located beneath the boot floor, at least in the case of the Sportage. Behind him, the hybrid drive will be the third generation of Kia Ceed in the first months of next year.

Christened 'EcoDynamics+', the new mild-hybrid powertrain is paired with a 0.46 kWh 48-volt lithium-ion battery and uses a new mild-hybrid starter-generator (MHSG) unit.

When the battery is sufficiently charged the system can even switch the engine off under deceleration or braking, automatically restarting as soon as the driver presses the accelerator pedal to provide a "Moving Stop & Start" function.

The EcoDynamics+ diesel mild-hybrid system is paired with Kia's Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) active emissions control technology, reducing Carbon dioxide emissions by up to 4% on the new Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), and up to 7% on the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC).

The MHSG is mounted in the engine bay and connected to the crankshaft by a belt.

The first auto that will receive this technology, are the Kia Sportage, which will be launched this year.

The EcoDynamics+ will be eventually adapted for use in petrol engines too, and is compatible with manual and automatic transmissions.

Kia already has hybrid, electric and plug-in hybrid models on sale in the UK.

Expect to hear more details soon on the Sportage's use of the EcoDynamics+ powertrain, as well as United Kingdom pricing and specifications.
