Mercedes cautious despite a commanding victory in Spain

Mercedes cautious despite a commanding victory in Spain

With the excitement of the first four races of the 2018 Formula 1 season offered, it would be in Catalunya where the world witnessed the dominant form of Mercedes-AMG get back in action.

"Why our auto doesn't like to be quick around the corners in Monaco we haven't found yet".

"We know that it is going to be a hard weekend, but as we have seen this year, you can still take great points from races you do not win". Hamilton had a lead of 17 seconds over his team mate, while Vettel was trying to catch Verstappen. The safety auto was brought out to move the stricken cars.

Mercedes have won both titles for the past four seasons. This allowed the Red Bull cars to move ahead.

We've seen the wings get bigger, smaller, wider, higher, lower and a combination of all of these, but the feeling coming out of the F1 technical camp is that this time the changes proposed have been better researched than anytime before.

Mercedes looked strong all weekend, happier on the amended Pirelli tyres introduced for this weekend due to worries about excessive wear and tyre temperatures. "It's the greatest feeling to come here and have that kind of performance and have a convincing win". In China and Baku, the Mercedes drivers seemed to be struggling to "wake up" the tyres as well as the Ferrari drivers for the one-lap performance they needed in qualifying.

Just before Raikkonen exited the race, a television commentator remarked on how extraordinary it was to see the young (and easily provoked) Max Verstappen not make a single error all weekend. Clearly the Ferrari was eating up its tyres more than the Mercedes, which is why the team felt the need to also do an extra pit stop. "Honestly before the race we expected one stop was not going to be possible - at least to do the race quickly with one stop".

"Of course they knew it would do because they said it was going to work but when they go away and do their expertise and come back on certain area on the auto you'll start to see the benefits from it".

Vettel will kick off proceedings in the Ferrari SF71H just two days after finishing fourth in Spain. That is encouraging for me because I have been racing a long time. "I think it was the right thing to do". However, the Haas of Romain Grosjean spun at Turn 3 and took out the Renault of Nico Hulkenberg and the Toro Rosso of Pierre Gasly. We've not had an easy start to this season but everyone has stayed focused and worked incredibly hard to take the fight to Ferrari and Red Bull.

On to Monaco next, where I've been this weekend driving at the Historic Grand Prix weekend in a Williams that Keke Rosberg won the race in back in 1983.
