Apple Watch 3 Put Airtel And Reliance Jio At Loggerheads

Though Bharti Airtel has refuted all allegations leveled by Jio pertaining to the Apple Watch services, the Sunil Mittal-led firm has slyly avoided the key question - whether it has the eSIM provisioning node in India or not.

According to PTI report, RJio has filed complaint against Bharti Airtel with the DoT, alleging that the telecom major is offering eSim service on Apple Watch Series 3 in violation of licence norms and demanded immediate closure of the service.

Reliance Jio on Thursday unveiled Jio post paid, its initial real step toward the smaller section of India's telecom marketplace.

"'Zero-Touch' post-paid plan to offer unlimited benefits at Rs 199 per month, worldwide calling starting at 50 paise per minute and global roaming at Rs 2 for voice, data and SMS for all Jio customers", Reliance Jio said in a statement on Thursday. Late last week, both Reliance Jio and Airtel started selling Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular in the country. The air provisioning of this eSIM is done by a dedicated network of nodes and they contain user information and other sensitive data. Also, Airtel's launched a new Rs. 219 plan comes with 1.4GB data per data per day or 39.4GB data for 28 days, along with unlimited calls (local and STD), free roaming, 100 SMSes per day, access to Airtel TV app, and free Hello Tunes subscription. The Apple Watch Series 3 cellular functionality is supported by Apple iPhone 6 and above.

Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) has asked the telecom ministry to take "severe action" and levy "strictest of penalties" against rival Bharti Airtel for violating license conditions by using a network of nodes, used to pair a subscriber's iPhone with the latest Apple watch, based overseas which could lead to a security breach. "Bharti Airtel is a law abiding and responsible operator". Launched past year, Apple Watch Series 3 Cellular allows iPhone users to make and recieve calls without the need of the device.

Jio's claim was regarding the network nodes hosting.

Jio also alleged that Airtel has deliberately chosen to install a critical network element outside India."We request your good office to take severe action against M/s Bharti Airtel Limited and impose the strictest of penalties under the License". But, Airtel has reportedly set the erstwhile base outside of India which risks user details being tracked by the foreign host country and breaches privacy code.

Further, Airtel should have carried out Legal Interception and Monitoring (LIM) prior to service launch so that important national security interests are not compromised in any manner. Airtel has denied all the charges. The maximum penalty for a breach of licence conditions is INR 500 million per circle.

Airtel spokesperson said to Zee Business, "This is yet another frivolous complaint by a desperate operator, whose sole aim appears to have a monopoly over everything that they do".
