The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), the National Federation of Families for Children's Mental Health, the American Association of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, and Mental Health America co-hosted the briefing and panel discussion, according to a statement from the lawmakers' offices.

The number of referrals since 2014 who were not eligible for treatment at the trust was 443 and the total not eligible in each year has increased - there were 62 cases in 2014/15 and 204 in 2017/2018.

Furthermore, 18 per cent of referrals for children were declined specialist CAMHS treatment in the region.

But the actual figures could be much higher.

Mental Health Awareness Week - spearheaded by the Mental Health Foundation - runs from today until Sunday. "The pressures they face in today's employment market are very different to past generations", MHF's Richard Grange said.

NSPCC chief executive Peter Wanless said: "Our research shows schools are increasingly referring children for specialist mental health treatment, often when the child is at crisis point".

The study of 4,619 people - which was conducted by YouGov on behalf of the Mental Health Foundation in partnership with Mental Health First Aid England for Mental Health Awareness Week (14-20 May) - also revealed that a quarter (25 per cent) of millennials and nearly one in five (18 per cent) baby boomers believe they compromise their health to do their job. It is vital that Government urgently provides more funding to Childline and help children who don't have access to support elsewhere'.

The NSPCC has warned that increased demand for support across specialist CAMHS, schools and the voluntary sector is placing the system under real pressure, "jeopardising the well-being of thousands of children".

Alana Ryan, the NSPCC policy officer, said: "It is worrying there are so many children being deemed as needing some kind of mental health support and whether or not that is mental health support that meets the clinical support threshold, it's still a need".

Research shows that two-thirds of us will experience mental ill-health of varying types at some point in our lives and the severity and impact of the issue, plus a person's ability to cope with it, can fluctuate on a daily, weekly or yearly basis.

"So children are getting less support and the number of learning assistants that provided the pastoral support are being reduced due to school cuts".

The Hertfordshire Community NHS Trust has received more than 1,000 referals from schools for pupils since 2014.

"Given that 40 per cent of respondents rated stigma a source of stress, this finding is alarming, and highlights the importance of early interventions and suicide prevention programs based on improving mental health literacy", they wrote.

"We know we need to do more which is why we have extended our schools and NHS link pilot to deliver training in 20 more areas of the country this year", he said.
