Hold the Nobel Prize: Kim is setting a trap for Trump

Pompeo was speaking after talks with his South Korean opposite number Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha to prepare for a historic June 12 summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"If North Korea takes bold action to quickly denuclearise, the United States is prepared to work with North Korea to achieve prosperity on the par with our South Korean friends", Pompeo told a news conference after talks with his South Korean counterpart in Washington.

Today's announcement comes after Trump said he would hold a summit with Kim in Singapore on June 12 - the first-ever meeting between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

The United States has offered North Korea a package to help the bitterly impoverished nation reconstruct and rebuild its economy if it fully scraps its nuclear weapons testing programme, the U.S. secretary of state has said.

The US will assist North Korea with its economy if Pyongyang gets rid of its nuclear weapons, its secretary of state has said.

"Kim Hak-song also worked at PUST and was detained on a similarly vague charge of "hostile acts" against North Korea". Their plane taxied to the meeting area, where a giant USA flag was suspended over the tarmac.

Trump's announcement came just hours after three Americans who had been held prisoner in North Korea arrived at a U.S. military base outside Washington, having been released by Kim.

"South and North Korea shared the view that the measures being initiated by North Korea are very meaningful and crucial for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and agreed to carry out their respective roles and responsibilities in this regard", the two leaders wrote in a joint statement.

So far, the North Korean regime has made vague pledges to "denuclearize" but has not spelled out what that means, when it would happen or how it would be implemented.

For its part, North Korea wants the lifting of sanctions and for the U.S.to withdraw the 28,500 troops it has stationed in South Korea. But the buoyant mood in Dandong is a reminder that China, as North Korea's main trade partner, can decide how strictly to enforce the worldwide sanctions against it.

The Trump administration insists it will maintain its campaign of "maximum pressure" on the North until Kim has shown "substantial dismantlement" of his nuclear arsenal.

While Kang sought to assure reporters that the USA and South Korea are unified on the matter, she was slightly more moderate on the possibility of relief, saying sanctions must remain in place "until we see visible, meaningful action taken by North Korea on the denuclearization track".

"The next few weeks will be critical, requiring airtight coordination between our two countries", Kang said.

For Pompeo, his visit to retrieve the trio was his second surprise trip to North Korea in recent weeks, having traveled there to visit the country's leader in early April while he was Central Intelligence Agency director - and before his confirmation as secretary of state. The previous three American presidents, Republicans and Democrats alike, have all negotiated flawed nuclear deals with North Korea.
