Microsoft may be lining up its own Cortana-powered smart speaker

Last year, Microsoft debuted in the field with Cortana-powered Harmon Kardon Invoke, but it garnered nearly zero market share and failed miserably. Google shared a few updates for its Google Home and, prior to the show, made its Android Things operating system available.

But that will not keep Microsoft from thinking of making a smart speaker themselves instead of relying on hardware partners.

According to a new report, Microsoft is working on a new smart speaker.

Some reports also suggest that Qualcomm will have a part in hardware of the device and even Qualcomm itself declared at CES 2018 that its smart home technology would support Cortana.

There aren't many details about the Quanta speaker and at this point, most observations are based on reference material that only makes note of a Snapdragon 212 processor pair with a couple of early mockups. This may not seem like a powerful chip but a smart speaker doesn't need good processing power as everything is done in the cloud.

Let it be noted, that Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has been quick to "disappear" products or projects that don't meet a certain standard and the Quanta development could be all for naught in the end.

This means Microsoft may not even go ahead with a smart speaker in the first place but just do a reference design for other manufacturers.

Smart speakers are one of the usual gadget present in our house, but these are the only gadgets that speak when you ask them a question or gives them a task to do like to add an item in your shopping list and many more daily tasks. If Microsoft is planning to manufacture the speaker in their own name, then it is very likely that it will fall under the Surface brand. As per the current scenario, Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant are on the ladder of growth while Cortana is moving opposite and loosing its continuous users.
