Philippine Supreme Court justices oust chief justice

House Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas, reacting to the SC's vote, said impeachment proceedings in Congress will "obviously" be moot and academic since Sereno would be removed from office.

In an 8-6 voting during the special en banc session on Friday, the SC justices have granted the quo warranto petition that Solicitor General Jose Calida filed seeking Sereno's removal. "She is seriously considering this recourse because we know the Supreme Court, has in a number of high-profile political cases, has flip-flopped or changed its mind, its decision", Sereno's camp said.

Senate President Aquilino Pimentel III, a key ally of Duterte, agreed with Sereno and urged the Supreme Court to review its decision, saying it's "not infallible in everything".

The Supreme Court (SC) made a decision to hold an oral argument on April 10 on the quo warranto petition filed by Calida against Sereno.

Sereno earlier contested the validity of Calida's petition, stressing "quo warranto" is not the proper remedy to remove a Chief Justice. She says she was ready to defend herself if the impeachment case reached the Senate for trial.

In a decision penned by Associate Justice Noel G. Tijam, the SC said Sereno "is found disqualified from and hereby adjudged guilty of exercising the office of the Chief Justice. Let's continue to spread the message of democracy and reason". She has been speaking up for the respect of law and human rights, irking Duterte at a time he has led a brutal crackdown on illegal drugs that has left thousands of suspects dead.

Calida filed the quo warranto petition against Sereno, alleging that the chief justice failed to comply with the requirements set by the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) during her application to the post, specifically, her failure to submit her statements of assets, liabilities and net worth (SALN). The Legislative embarked on a fishing expedition via impeachment hearings to destroy the reputation of the Chief Justice.

"She is very likely to file this motion for reconsideration".

Anti-Sereno protesters were sighted along Ma. Sereno denies the allegation and did not participate in the vote.
