The model will be fully revealed at Volkswagen's famous annual GTI meet at Worthersee on Thursday 10 May, ahead of going on sale at the end of the year.

This year, VW has teased the Golf GTI TCR which it's knocking up to celebrate the fact it's the two-time victor of the global TCR race series.

That makes the TCR the fastest road-going Golf ever (if you request to have it de-restricted) "and generally the fastest Volkswagen licenced for use on the roads" according to VW.

While that's down on the 330 hp and 302 lb-ft that the GTI TCR race auto makes, it's still a healthy bump over the standard GTI's 220 hp and 258 lb-ft.

Running the same engine as the Golf GTI, the GTI TCR offers 213kW and 370Nm of torque running through a seven-speed DSG and the front-wheels only.

A new 286bhp version of the GTI will be revealed in Austria very soon.

. The vehicle will able to achieve an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h, which go up to 264km/h if the limiter is removed. The auto will feature different front splitter, side skirts and rear diffuser. Based on the GTI that races in the TCR series, this GTI TCR sticks with its 2.0-liter turbocharged I4, but output jumps to 286 hp.

No, it's not the actual and very successful touring auto one that Volkswagen has made available to private teams since 2016 - this is a new road-going hot hatch that'll sit atop the Golf GTI range.
