BEFORE THE DAWN: Thousands gather to honour our Anzacs

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the armistice that ended the First World War.

"The attendance at this year's dawn service shows the enduring connection so many people have to Anzac Day", Memorial Director Brendan Nelson said in a statement.

Tens of thousands of Turkish nationals and soldiers died, along with tens of thousands of Europeans, plus around 7,000-8,000 Australians and almost 3,000 New Zealanders, referred to together as Anzac troops.

Turnbull said in an Anzac Day message that Australians remember veterans of every generation who risked their lives for their country.

A BUS carrying young Australian and New Zealand travellers to the Anzac Day dawn service at Gallipoli has burst into flames.

Thousands have packed into Pukeahu War Memorial to pay their respects.

It takes place at Hyde Park Corner at the New Zealand memorial and it is advised that attendees get there from 4am onwards because of the crowds, but it will start at 6am.

Temperatures are forecast to drop to around 14 degrees along with a wind chill factor when the Dawn Service begins in Gallipoli.

Many New Zealanders and Australians alike have deeply personal links to Anzacs, with many this morning sharing memories and photos of their own relatives engaged in the war effort.
