Senate panel approves Pompeo for secretary of state

President Trump last month nominated Pompeo - a former Kansas congressman who is now the director of the Central Intelligence Agency - to succeed then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson after he fired him.

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved the nomination on a party-line vote, with all 11 Republicans backing him, nine Democrats opposed and one Democrat, Chris Coons, voting "present" because one Republican was at a funeral out of town.

Among the most recently serving Secretaries of State, for example, Colin Powell (unanimously confirmed via unrecorded voice vote), Condoleeza Rice, Hillary Clinton, and John Kerry all cleared the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on unanimous or near-unanimous votes and were confirmed on the Senate floor in votes that included only a handful of votes in opposition.

Pompeo's nomination now goes before the full U.S. Senate. Last week, Senator Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota announced that she would be supporting Pompeo's confirmation and she was joined yesterday by Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Joe Donnelly of Indiana. He was named to the post of the nation's top diplomat after Mr. Trump fired Rex Tillerson last month.

And, rather than simply attack Paul when the Kentucky Republican voiced his concerns about the hawkishness of Pompeo on national security and foreign policy matters, Trump praised Paul publicly and worked to convince him privately. "I don't care if it is Rand Paul or anybody else".

"Over the weekend, both meeting with Pompeo and then also discussing again on the phone with him and the president - every time I talk to the president, I become more and more of the belief that he truly does share my notion we've been at war too long and at too many places", Paul continued. It went from "Potential disaster looms for Pompeo, Trump" to "Pompeo confirmation appears to be on a glide path".
