Naxalites neutralised in Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra, operation underway

A total of 14 Naxals were killed in an encounter by the Gadchiroli police near Tadgaon Village in Maharashtra on Sunday.

During searches, more than 12 Naxals' dead bodies have been recovered from the spot in Gadchiroli.

The Gadchiroli operation is being hailed as a major one against the Naxals and comes within a month of Home Minister Rajnath Singh stating that Naxalism has entered its last phase in the country.

Sharad Shelar, Inspector General of Police, said that two district-level "commanders" of the outfit, identified as Sainath and Sainyu, were among those killed in the encounter.

As the troops of specialized anti-Naxal squad C-60 were patrolling the area, they encountered a Naxal Dalam at Tadgaon forest around 150 kilometres from police headquarters in Bhamragad tehsil. The exchange of fire took place after the police team was sacked upon and they retaliated.

Director General of Police Satish Mathur congratulated the C-60 team which participated in the encounter.

The DGP said there was a possibility that Naxal leaders of "DVC ranks", Sainath and Sinu alias Srikant, were among those killed. So, Police had launched an operation on Today, around morning 9.30 am, an encounter ensued.
