Comey calls Trump an unethical liar in autobiography

The Comey broadside came during a busy morning for Trump on Twitter, which also saw him take shots at OPEC for causing "artificially" high oil prices and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi over taxes.

Mueller was appointed Special Counsel by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein after he had recommended Trump fire Comey in part over his handling of the Hillary Clinton email investigation.

The disagreement involves conflicting recollections about a conversation the two men had after an October 2016 Wall Street Journal story about an FBI investigation into the Clinton Foundation.

The memos offer some additional details of the then-FBI director's interactions with the president, but they largely corroborate Mr Comey's account of the key events that have been public for nearly a year.

"Honestly, I am aghast that they thought this was going to be helpful to the president and undermine Comey, therefore the Federal Bureau of Investigation, therefore special counsel Mueller", said Jack Quinn, who had acted as Bill Clinton's lawyer. But the newly released memos also feature previously unreported details and exchanges, including Trump's complaints about retired Gen. Michael Flynn's judgment.

The Comey saga gained momentum Thursday with the release of his memos on meetings with Trump.

"The president then wrapped up our conversation by returning to the issue of finding leakers", Comey wrote in a memo dated February 14, 2017. "He replied by telling me to talk to (Attorney General Jeff) Sessions and see what we can do about being more aggressive", Comey wrote. It followed reports that USA special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian links to Trump has found evidence that Cohen had, indeed, made a trip to Prague.

Mr. Flynn was sacked after he misled Vice President Mike Pence about conversations he had with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Trump fired James Comey in May of previous year. Comey said he did not comment at the time. What struck him most, Comey told ABC, was that the conversation moved straight into a public relations mode, what they could say and how they could position Trump.

"President Trump's interference was a blatant effort to deny justice, and Director Comey was right to document it as it happened - in real time", Cummings said.

It is latest of many verbal blows the US President and former FBI Director have launched at each other.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired him last month, and the inspector general's office in recent weeks referred the matter to the USA attorney's office in Washington for a possible criminal investigation.

Comey was asked if he believed the dossier's allegations. Comey said he responded to Priebus and explained how Priebus should ask similar questions in the future through established White House-Justice Department channels.

Trump critics like David Frum argued that the Comey memos validated Comey's beef with Trump.
