Their son, George W Bush, was elected president in 2000 and served two terms as the nation's 43rd president.

The snowy-haired Mrs. Bush was one of only two first ladies who was also the mother of a president.

The publisher's daughter and oilman's wife could be caustic in private, but her public image was that of self-sacrificing, supportive spouse who referred to her husband as her "hero".

Before being president, he served as a congressman, Central Intelligence Agency director and Ronald Reagan's vice president. "And I think her passion for the cause, her prominence and her stature and her conviction has really drawn people to want to support it". Barbara Pierce Bush was born June 8, 1925, in Rye, New York.

The couple were engaged before her husband left to fly in World War 2.

What certainly got attention in the Bush White House of 1989-1992 was Barbara's positions on hot topic issues such as abortion and homosexuality. He had flown 58 combat missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery.

Mrs Bush married George HW Bush on January 6 1945.

Books have always been like members of the family for the Bushes.

"The pearls are to cover the wrinkles, which they no longer do", said Bush to her granddaughter.

Barbara Bush sometimes made biting remarks, particularly when she felt the need to defend her husband. Bush eschewed dying her hair, which ultimately turned white. Her children's book about their dog, Millie, and her puppies written during her White House years was, as were her other books, a bestseller. While she urged her son at one point to not campaign, George W. went on to win his gubernatorial election in 1995. Unlike Mrs. Bush, Abigail Adams did not live to see her son's inauguration. It started when she attended reading day at her son's school. "I was thinking, 'Well, I'm being there for him, ' " she recalled.

"I have climbed perhaps the highest mountain in the world, but even that can not hold a candle to being Barbara's husband", he also said.

She had open-heart surgery in 2009 and in 2008 underwent surgery for a perforated ulcer.

In the last two years, Bush has been battling Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, also known as COPD, and congestive heart failure, according to ABC. But, along with her husband, she kept an active public schedule, raising money for charity.
