He won election previous year against far-right, anti-immigration candidate Marine Le Pen and has advanced his pro-Europeanism views in the face of populist leanings elsewhere on the continent.

Macron argued that the European Parliament should make progress on migration issues, digital taxation and reform of the euro zone before the end of its current term in 2019.

Speaking after Macron, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned that the EU isn't just a club led by France and Germany.

Recently, the US and France, along with the United Kingdom, carried out missile strikes against Syrian chemical weapons facilities in response to a chemical attack that is widely believed to have been carried out by the Syrian government.

Less than two weeks ago, President Trump said he wanted to remove all American troops from Syria.

Speaking to Fox News, when US ambassador to the UN Nikki Halley was confronted about whether Trump's claim of "mission accomplished" was premature, she said: "Well, first of all, "mission accomplished" is a military term, and as a military spouse I know that "mission accomplished" means you have one task now in front of you, and when it's completed, it's 'mission accomplished'".

Macron is the fourth European leader to have a debate about the future of Europe with MEPs.

But with Britain set to become the first country to leave the bloc next year, Macron told European Union lawmakers in Strasbourg, France that "I will only support an enlargement when there is first a deepening and a reform of our Europe".

In his speech, Emmanuel macron also reiterated his call for the creation of a separate budget for the Eurozone countries.

Any reforms have to be "in the European and in the German interest", CDU secretary-general Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer told reporters.

"I propose creating a European program that directly financially supports local communities that welcome and integrate refugees", Macron said.
