Woolworths supermarkets hit by IT outage

Numerous customers have shared images on social media of long queues at cash registers and stores that have closed their doors.

"They've told everyone just to leave their food and leave the store".

"We apologise for the inconvenience this caused our customers", the spokesperson said. Many have left full trolleys behind.

"...we can confirm an IT issue impacted registers in our supermarkets for a short period of time this afternoon", the company told customers on Twitter.

At around 4pm yesterday registers at Woolies stores unexpectedly shut down due to a "system fault" - the fault lasted around 30 minutes.

"It was really frustrating".

A national technical outage brought sales to a standstill at the busy Mackay city store this afternoon.

More than 20 shoppers were reportedly turned away by the security guard.

By 5pm, Woolworths tweeted that all registers were back online and apologised for the outage.

Shoppers took to Facebook across Australia to complain about the outage and accused the supermarket chain of "ruining dinner plans".
