Tamil Nadu: Teacher 'asks students to perform sexual favours for official', held

According to a report by Mumbai Mirror, she has been suspended by the college administration following complaints from the students. Referring to the "big official", Devi is heard promising that students willing to take up the task will get favours in academics, marks, and financial benefits "in a bank account". The police picked her up for questioning on charge of attempting to traffic four girl students of the college.

High drama preceded the arrest as the woman allegedly locked herself in her house and a 50-strong police team broke open the backdoor and detained her.

A senior police officer privy to Nirmala Devi's questioning said she admitted that the voice in the audio clip was hers.

The Madurai Kamaraj University has withdrawn its five-member probe committee after Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is also the Chancellor of the University, announced an investigation by a former bureaucrat yesterday.

"It is important to enquire into such matters immediately and without prejudice so that the guilty do not escape without punishment", the Governor said. "/ to yield to "sexual favours" of higher ranking authorities of the state-owned Madurai Kamaraj University". Without using any direct reference to sexual favour, she indirectly implies that as a teacher, she had supported them till now academically.

When the students refused to acquiesce to her proposition, Nirmala Devi asked them to not be hasty and take a few days to think it through.

The state's Fisheries Minister D Jayakumar told reporters in Chennai that such "black sheep" can not be allowed and assured that the government will take action against her.

The girls however went ahead and filed a complaint with the college management on March 19.

She, however, has denied sexual angle to her advice and claimed she had made it "in the right spirit" and not with any hidden motive or agenda.

Police sources said Nirmala Devi completed her graduation from Devanga College itself and did her research in MKU. Pattali Makkal Katchi's (PMK) Anbumani Ramadoss demanded a CBI probe to help unearth the top officials behind the matter.
