North Korea, China 'discussing Xi Jinping visit to Pyongyang'

The two Koreas may also discuss pulling some of their forces away from the heavily fortified demilitarized zone separating them, the newspaper said.

A successful Moon-Kim summit could help pave the way for the Trump-Kim meeting, which would be the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will reportedly talk on the phone later this week or early next week.

No peace treaty has been signed to replace the 1953 armistice that ended the Korean War, and the US and North Korea have been at loggerheads since formal hostilities ceased.

Asked about the report, a foreign ministry spokesman in Beijing said: "We are willing to maintain and strengthen high-level exchanges with the DPRK (North Korea), deepen strategic communication and expand exchanges and cooperation to benefit the people of both countries".

The peninsula remains bisected in a perpetual stalemate, with the USA -backed South Korean military lined up against more than a million North Korean troops. But Pyongyang has insisted that the two Koreas should sign a non-aggression treaty and a peace treaty should be signed between North Korea and the US.

Noting his meeting with Kim will soon be followed by a meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and the North Korean leader, Moon said the upcoming summits will mark a "great transition" in the history of the world.

The report said the focus of the inter-Korean summit's agenda would be threefold: denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, a peace deal, and progress in inter-Korean relations. The North also had expressed readiness to hold a similar event with the President of the United States.

He stressed that Seoul will therefore make efforts to communicate with the United States as the country and North Korea work on their summit.

The third inter-Korean summit, following two previous meetings in 2000 and 2007, will be held on the South Korean side of the truce village of Panmunjom.
