Kendrick Lamar becomes first rapper to win Pulitzer music prize

The 30-year-old rapper received the award for his album Damn.

A photographer in Charlottesville, Virginia, has won a Pulitzer for capturing the moment a auto struck several people protesting against a white nationalist rally. He described the prize as an "incredible honor" and said he was proud of the work "we all did at The Daily Progress".

The same week it celebrates its first birthday, Kendrick Lamar's DAMN. has just won a Pulitzer Prize.

Reuters won two Pulitzer Prizes on Monday, one for exposing the methods of police killing squads in Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's war on drugs, and one for feature photography documenting the Rohingya migrant crisis between Myanmar and Bangladesh.

According to The Associated Press, "The Pulitzer board said Monday the album is a "virtuosic song collection" and said it captures 'the modern African American life'".

Other Pulitzer winners this year included The New York Times and The New Yorker for their journalism, breaking the Harvey Weinstein scandal and kicking off the #MeToo movement and Locking Up Our Own: Crime and Punishment in Black America, by James Forman Jr., in general non-fiction writing.

A string of stories in The Times and The Washington Post shined a light on Russian interference in the presidential election and its connections to the Trump campaign and transition - ties now under investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller.

Lamar's politically charged performance at the Grammy Awards in January won him wide praise. The president has branded the investigation a "witch hunt".

The New Yorker's Ronan Farrow was also recognized for a Weinstein report that detailed the allegations of a woman who reported her accusations to New York police. He has apologized for "the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past" but denied any non-consensual sexual contact.

The winners of the Pulitzer Prizes in journalism and the arts are set to be announced in New York City.

Prizes were also awarded for fiction, nonfiction, drama, history, biography, poetry and music.

The 2017 Pulitzer Prize for music went to "Angel's Bone", an opera by composer Du Yun.
