IEBC thrown into crisis as three commissioners resign

The first commissioner to resign was Roselyn Akombe who quit just days to the October 26, 2017 repeat presidential poll.

The resignations leave only two commissioners and the chairman at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) which last week sent its chief executive on three months' compulsory leave pending an audit on procurement matters.

The three are IEBC vice chair Connie Nkatha Maina, commissioners Margaret Mwachanya and Dr Paul Kurgat. It is either Chiloba is reinstated or the entire commission goes down.

The commissioners previous year refused to step down amid opposition calls on them to resign, followed by protests to force their resignation, leading to scores of deaths.

The trio tendered their resignation letters on April 16 indicating they had stepped down effective immediately.

They claimed that IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati had pushed forward with a vote on the matter despite not having a quorum since not all six commissioners were present.

"The Commission Chair has failed to be the steady and stable hand that steers the ship in hard times and gives directions when needed", they noted in a statement. "Under his leadership, the Commission boardroom has become a venue for peddling misinformation, grounds for brewing mistrust, and a space for scrambling for and chasing for individual glory and credit", the three said.

And a source, who enjoys warm relationship with DP Ruto, says the resignation emanated from the country's second in command because he was not "comfortable" with Chiloba's suspension.

The commissioners who stepped down today said that they still believe Kenya's elections previous year were done properly.

"Therefore the events related to the purported vote have already shaken our already feeble confidence in the chair".
