Bill Cosby lawyer scours accuser's words, looking for doubt

Her mother Gianna Constand was also asked to take the stand, and confirmed her daughter's story.

Constand replied, "Her name sounds familiar, but I don't really remember her. ..." "This isn't about money".

Constand's mother followed her on the witness stand and bolstered her account, testifying about a phone conversation she said she had with the comedian about a year after the alleged assault in which he described in graphic detail their sexual account and then apologized. Gianna Constand testified that she is very close with her daughter and spoke to Andrea Constand frequently during her 18 months employed by Temple.

She told jurors that she was concerned because her daughter hadn't been the same since leaving Temple in March 2004 and moving back to Canada, screaming in her sleep and waking up in a sweat.

Both women worked at Temple University around the time Constand says Cosby drugged and molested her at the comedian's suburban Philadelphia home in 2004.

She remained outwardly calm during two hours of cross-examination in the sexual assault retrial, fending off queries on topics that the defence brought forward to indicate she had converted a consensual sexual encounter with Cosby into a criminal assault in order to score a big payday. The testimony was also included at his first trial, which ended with a hung jury previous year.

Bill Cosby returns to the courtroom after a recess on the sixth day of his sexual assault retrial at the Montgomery County Courthouse in Norristown, Pa., on April 16, 2018.

At last year's trial, Cosby's lawyers suggested that Constand and the former Cosby Show star were lovers who'd been intimate with each other in the past.

But Mesereau, who's best known for winning Michael Jackson an acquittal in his 2005 child molestation case, was incredulous as Constand denied being aware that Cosby was sexually attracted to her - even after he touched her thigh on one occasion and tried unbuttoning her trousers on another.

Among the "prior bad acts" witnesses was TV star and supermodel Janice Dickinson, who testified Thursday that she confronted Cosby and wanted to strike him after she said he drugged her and raped her in 1982 at a hotel in Lake Tahoe. Tom Mesereau briefly touched on the phone records, particularly pointing to calls between Constand and Cosby on Valentine's Day, several weeks after the alleged assault.

The woman, Nicolle Rochelle, turned out to be a former child actor on The Cosby Show.

"Did you think it was appropriate to be in a married man's room at the time?" he asked her once about her going to visit Cosby for advice.

The mother of Bill Cosby's chief accuser tells jurors the comedian admitted to her that he was a "sick man". She also alleged that Andrea Constand was close to losing her job at Temple due to poor performance and that the university was pursuing collections for money owed by her, which Gianna Constand said she didn't know about either.

On Monday, Constand testified she did not "recall ever having a conversation with" Jackson.

A judge blocked Jackson from testifying at last year's trial after Constand took the stand and denied knowing her. Judge Steven T. O'Neill allowed certain evidence about the settlement to be used at retrial, but it was not used during the 2017 trial.

Jackson's availability as a witness for Cosby could be crucial to a defense plan to attack Constand's credibility and get jurors to believe she set Cosby up.

Five other women who also allege that Cosby drugged and assaulted them were called to the stand by the prosecution.

Andrea Constand testified Friday that she drank wine and took three blue pills at Cosby's urging in January 2004, then lost consciousness and, sometime later, was "jolted awake" to find the entertainer sexually assaulting her.
