This was partially available earlier but was meant for the un-downloaded media files for 30 days. Now, it has introduced a feature that allows the user to download old media content again even if he/she deleted it from their phone. The option to re-download content has been enabled on version 2.18.113, and users can test the same. Extremely old stuff from August 2017 wasn't accessible at all, with WhatsApp simply asking them to request the sender to forward the media again.

Amid all the crisis of data protection across the globe, WhatsApp has launched another feature that increases the brand's liability to store personal user data more securely. But this is not the case now, as the app lets you download deleted media from its servers with the latest update. You can never re-download the same on WhatsApp again. The first characters in the timestamp "Yesterday" "Today" are being replaced by their ASCII equivalent- "89esterday" "84oday".

To be clear, only those messages that are still in your chat log will be downloadable again.
