Unidentified victim may be from Odisha, probe on — Surat minor rape

In Surat, people took out a candlelight march against the rape and murder of an 11-year-old girl, who was tortured for over eight days and killed on April 5. While the police had earlier said that a body of a girl had been found, details of the case were made public on Sunday with Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma holding a press conference.

The girl has not been identified and her body has not been claimed yet, reported India Today. Her body bore 86 injury marks, including in private parts.

Police have announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for anyone coming forward to give information about the girl.

Despite the Gujarat Police leaving no stone unturned to trace the identity of 11-year-old girl, who was reportedly murdered after brutal sexual assault for nearly a week, cops are clueless about the girl's family as well as the accused.

According to the media reports, the post-mortem report of the minor has revealed that she was raped and tortured before being strangled to death.

The victim's brutalised body with 86 injury marks was found by a passerby lying in bushes in Surat's Bhestan locality on April 6.

Where the nation is still reeling from the grief of horrific Kathua and Unnao rape cases, yet another similar incident has slapped us with a question raising woman safety, especially children.

Odisha's Director General of Police (DGP) R P Sharma told reporters that all the superintendents of police (SPs) in his state have been asked to collect data on missing girls in their district after the Surat Police informed his force they suspect the rape and murder victim was from Odisha. The minister assured that the perpetrators of the gruesome crime would not be spared.

Surat's ACP (Crime) RR Sarvaiya said it was possible that the girl belonged to a state other than Gujarat.

In the Kathua case, the police charge sheet says the girl from the Bakarwal nomadic tribe was kidnapped, held in a temple in Kathua's Rasana village, drugged, repeatedly raped and then murdered to scare her community out of the neighbourhood. He died on Monday, while in police custody.
