Several inmates dead after incident at SC prison

The prison is located in the Town of Bishopville in Lee County, and is a Level 3 facility, meaning it houses some of the most violent offenders in the SC prison system.

Logan said he just finished identifying all the dead Monday and is working to notify relatives.

The South Carolina Department of Corrections tweeted that the deaths happened as in multiple inmate-on-inmate altercations in three housing units.

The department of corrections says all law enforcement officers who responded to the prison are safe and accounted for.

Lee County Fire/Rescue said ambulances from at least seven jurisdictions lined up outside the prison to tend to the wounded. The local coroner's office also responded.

In February, an inmate was killed by another inmate in a fight.

Lee Correctional Institution is one of South Carolina's highest-security prisons, which means the inmates are generally tightly monitored and their movements inside the facility are limited.

Seven inmates were killed in prison fights at Lee Correctional Institution.
