Russian Federation to enforce nationwide ban on Telegram app

"Russian authorities have begun blocking Telegram".

The ruling by Moscow judge Yulia Smolina imposes restrictions on access to Telegram and stops providing technical support for message transmission in order to meet the requirements of Russian communications watchdog Roskomnadzor.

A recent demand by Russian security agency the FSB to help Telegram decrypt messages linked to six phone numbers went unanswered by the firm.

On Friday, a Moscow court sided with the regulator, Roskomnadzor, in ordering to block Telegram in Russian Federation "immediately".

Telegram is popular among blockchain and cryptocurrency advocates. Durov said earlier last week the the latest version would have "built-in" features that would avoid the ban.

"At any given moment, a government can crash their stocks by threatening to block revenue streams from its markets and thus force these companies to do odd things (remember how past year Apple moved iCloud servers to China)", he added. Telegram, a free application that lets people exchange messages, stickers, photos and videos in groups of up to 5,000 people, has attracted more than 200 million users since its launch by Durov and his brother Nikolai in 2013. Unfortunately it seems that it is this level of security and privacy that has resulted in the app getting banned in Russian Federation. Other countries to have blocked the app or its services includes Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Bahrain. Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) wants to access user data from Telegram through the sharing of encryption keys, but Telegram has refused to comply even after a court ruling.
