Delhi Daredevils register thrilling win over Mumbai Indians

Delhi Daredevils player Jason Roy bats against Mumbai Indians during VIVO IPL cricket T20 match in Mumbai, India, on Saturday, April 14, 2018.

Kolkata: Rain stopped play between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for nearly an hour in the IPL match here at the Eden Gardens on Saturday. A team that is three-time champion of the tournament and is now the defending champion, is not supposed to play like Mumbai has been doing so far this season. Needing 11 runs in the last over bowled by Mustafizur Rahman, Roy struck a four and six off the first two deliveries but missed the next three deliveries, thus giving the Delhi dugout a few anxious moments.

Delhi made Mumbai bat first, and openers Suryakumar Yadav (53 off 32) and Evin Lewis (48 off 28) made a great start. "Hope the senior guys take a little bit of pressure off them in terms of the way they set the innings up particularly in Shubmans case", he said.

Ishan Kishan, batting at No. 3, recovered from a slow start to slam 44 off 23 balls, but Mumbai fell away below him.

Shami has turned out in all the three matches for DD and a team official said there's no question of his availability as it remains to be seen where there's also a court room battle in the offing.

With the Mumbai Indians meeting the Delhi Daredevils as the only two win-less teams in this young IPL tournament, the stakes were high for the star-studded squads.

He finished with 91 not out in 53 balls (6x4, 6x6) and the match went right to the wire with DD scoring the winning run on the last ball.

The belief was strengthened when Rishabh Pant went after leg-spinner Mayank Markande and scored a 25-ball 47 with half a dozen 4s and two sixes. Glenn Maxwell's (13) stay at the crease was cut short with Hardik taking a stunning catch. Whereas, Delhi never had a chance of holding the trophy and is gunning to win the coveted title under veteran opener Gautam Gambhir's guidance.

Skipper Rohit Sharma, who had demoted himself at No 4 today, could only score 18 runs off 15 balls with 2 boundaries only.

Put in to bat, KKR were 52/1 when rain halted play for nearly an hour. The delay helped Hyderabad, who picked up wickets regularly and restricted the Knight Riders to 138-8. He batted more than me so obviously he had better idea about the wicket. They come after six overs and bowl till 15th over. "We'll have to turn around quickly". A quick single and the job would have been done, but Mustafizur did not allow one of the most successful strikers of the day to connect the next three balls.
