UB softball swept in Friday doubleheader

It was a day of Jekyll and Hyde, an Iona College fan said of the team's sweep over the Quinnipiac softball team on Friday, the final scores being 6-0 and 6-5.

"We needed to go get that first pitch strike", she said.

"They kind of got out of hand", Roberts said. Amanda White doubled to restart the offense and scored when Olivia Conner's fly to left was erred to extend the inning. Austin Petravicius, Nolan Bryant, Jacob Buchberger and Brian Sobieski also recorded an RBI for the Panthers.

Yet, the Yellow Jackets would answer loudly in the sixth inning, as they put up five runs to tie the game off of a Kayla Riley walk and Britany Guzman double more notably.

Caitlyn Cioni led off with a bloop single and then Hundley laid down a ideal bunt single and went to third on the error which allowed Cioni to give the Lady Panthers a 2-1 lead. She went 6 2/3 innings, surrendering 7 runs on 7 hits and striking out 2 batters.

"We like our chances headed into the playoffs and are excited about the possibility of hosting a home playoff game". Jeremy Mercier went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Junior Katie Krzus led off the inning with a single up the middle to land herself at first.

Freshman Hannah Eslick then delivered in a pivotal at bat, knocking a two-RBI single to give the Terps a 3-2 lead. The comeback came up short and Anderson was landed with the loss.

The Spartans took the first game of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon defeating the Crusaders, 5-4 in extra innings.

Taylor Wilson notched her first career triple in the bottom of the fourth, slicing a ball past a diving right fielder with two outs. The Red Wolves responded in the top of the fifth when Hawkins singled home Tipton then later scored on an error after a base hit by Kyle MacDonald to put A-State on top 2-1. Haley Peaslee went 2 for 4 for the Broncos with three RBIs, while No. 9 hitter Kayli Boucher went 2 for 3 with a sac bunt and a pair of runs. The Panthers made a pitching change.

Carlinville tallied two more runs in the seventh inning. Kasarda had an RBI-double and scored on a single by Sarti, making it 9-0. Josh Minjarez didn't let the visitors hold the edge for long as he hit a two-out solo home run in the bottom half to tie things up at 2-2.

Drexel scored another two runs starting with a double by Rush. Closser scored on an error before Ally Hall singled, Hawhee reached when she was hit by a pitch and Landes doubled for the second time in the inning to drive home two runs.

Anderson came into the circle in the bottom of the fifth with the score at 6-5. With one out, a single to right field plated the runner from third to even the score at 6-6. That would let them advance another base because of it.

Port Richmond pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning.

The Spartans are now 10-21 on the season and will face Valparaiso to complete the weekend series at 1:05 p.m. Saturday.
