New Jersey declares "Bon Jovi Day"

New Jersey declares

In its citation, the Hall of Fame credited the London band with its revival of Americana, saying, "Dire Straits dragged rock kicking and screaming back to its gritty, country roots using beefy guitar licks and bluesy vocals".

A classically-trained pianist, Simone is often referred to as "The High Priestess of Soul".

Stern also thanked Bon Jovi for its music, which he is a big fan of, and stressed how big of a deal it is that the band has sold more than 130 million albums.

"Ocasek found his silver and gold in Benjamin Orr right here in OH back in 1964", Brandon Flowers, lead singer of the Killers, said in his induction speech of a band that had already charted several hits before he was born in 1981.

While inducting his old friends Bon Jovi into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Howard Stern quipped that "Jann Wenner finally let Bon Jovi in".

"That started as an April Fool's joke, and I couldn't help but perpetuate the myth further when people started to take it a bit seriously", Clark said. "It's as simple as that", Illsley, in an interview with Billboard, said of Mark Knopfler.

Orr died in 2000, but each of the band members acknowledged his impact, with lead singer Ric Ocasek saying "it feels unusual being up here without him".

Founded in Boston, The Cars had a strong connection to Cleveland, the hometown of late bassist Benjamin Orr, who sang lead vocals on some the band's biggest hits like "Just What I Needed", "Bye Bye Love" and "Drive".

Overlooked but never unappreciated, Sister Rosetta Tharpe is finally a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer.

Tharpe died in 1973 and was a pioneering guitarist who performed gospel music. It was part of a lengthy, and profanity-filled, speech in which Stern, true to form, simultaneously praised and mocked the group, the first of this year's class to be inducted tonight.

One day earlier, Bernie Karr, a board member for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Foundation and a former Toledo attorney, looked over a crowd that was crammed into the Rock Hall, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the inductees.

There was a moment Saturday evening outside of Public Auditorium when you couldn't hear anything but screams.

Tharpe will be inducted by Brittany Howard, of Alabama Shakes. Mary J. Blige will induct Simone, who died in 2003.
