Indian policemen involved in Kathua rape sacked

In this regard, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stated that he wants Indian authorities to ensure that the perpetrators of the "horrific" gang rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua be brought to justice.

Both Ganga and Singh had participated in a rally on March 1 after the crime branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police had arrested the nephew of a caretaker of a "Devisthan" (temple) in connection with the kidnapping and rape of the little girl.

Confirming the reports of their resignation, BJP's state chief spokesperson Sunil Sethi said, "It is a simple resignation letter, but they have done it to save party from the adverse publicity going on in the media about their publicly supporting the Hindu Ekta Manch who have been demanding shifting of investigations into the girl's rape and murder case from state's Crime Branch to CBI".

It became heavily politicised and two BJP ministers from Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti's cabinet, who defended the accused, had to be shunted out.

BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav flew to Jammu on Saturday morning to consult MLAs and MLCs on the situation in the state. The two ministers were present at the rally in support of the rape-accused where the tricolour was also waved. "Intolerance and hate are hitting at the country's core values and posing a great threat to the pluralism, the only option for achieving the goals India has set out", she said and added that India comprises a composite culture and no one has domination in it.

The meeting of PDP legislators and senior party leaders in Srinagar "praised the role played by the BJP in the Kathua case".

Asked whether a dent has been created in the alliance after the Kathua case, Madhav said, "As far as this case is concerned, we have done our bit by allaying the fears and misconception created in the minds of not only the people of Jammu and Kashmir but also in the entire country by asking our two ministers to resign".

Stressing the urgency of responding to the challenges in Jammu and Kashmir through tangible political measures before the crisis degenerates into a catastrophe; Mehbooba said the people of J-K, irrespective of their age, gender, status or the political affiliation, have been suffering the disastrous consequences of the political uncertainties plaguing the state.

Akhtar told reporters that PDP appreciated the support of the BJP, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP chief Amit Shah in the case. Her body was found dumped in a forest near Rasana village seven days later.
