Syria strike: UK, US and France punish chemical attack

Tehran also slammed the US's decision of launching air strikes in Syria.

The US, UK and France launched airstrikes against multiple targets in Syria early on Saturday morning, targeting sites linked to alleged chemical weapons production. "This massacre was a significant escalation in a pattern of chemical weapons use by that very bad regime".

"The attack this morning against Syria is a crime", he said. A Security Council diplomat said the body would meet later Saturday.

Last weekend's chemical weapons attack on the Syrian people was just the latest.

Huge blasts were reported around Damascus early on Saturday, moments after the US, France, and Britain announced they were striking Syria's chemical weapons capabilities.

"The red line set by France in May 2017 has been crossed", he said.

The Pentagon claimed the strikes targeted a research center in greater Damascus and a chemical weapons storage facility and a command post west of Homs, while the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons has officially stated complete disarmament of Syria since two years ago. More than 100 missiles were fired in the capital city of Damascus by the United States and its allies- France and Britain.

May said the aim was to deter the Syrian regime authorities from further use of chemical weapons and to send a message to the wider world that it was unacceptable to use such weapons.

"We specifically identified these targets to mitigate the risk of Russian forces being involved", Dunford told reporters.

Trump said he was prepared to sustain the response until Assad's government stopped its use of chemical weapons.

An official Syrian statement condemned what it called a "tyrannical, terrorist, tripartite aggression" against the Syrian government.

It said three civilians were wounded in the Homs attacks but did not give a toll for Damascus or mention any combatant casualties.

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) said that four RAF Tornado jets were deployed to launch missiles at a Syrian military facility.

"Over the past year, almost 100 percent of the territory once controlled by the so-called ISIS caliphate in Syria and Iraq has been liberated and eliminated", he said.

The Pentagon said Saturday that a series of military strikes on Syria carried out by a US-led coalition struck at the "heart" of Syria's chemical weapons program.

"The worst apprehensions have come true".

"Again, we are being threatened", Russia's ambassador to the US, Anatoly Antonov, said in a statement.

They "are responsible for the regional consequences of this adventurist action", it said, condemning a "clear violation of global rules and laws".

Mr Trump chastised Syria's two main allies, Russia and Iran, for their roles in supporting "murderous dictators", and noted that Russian president Vladimir Putin had guaranteed a 2013 worldwide agreement for Mr Assad to get rid of all of his chemical weapons.
