Mets' Kevin Plawecki has broken left hand, report says

With Travis d'Arnaud (elbow) scheduled for Tommy John surgery, and Kevin Plawecki (hand) set to miss 3-4 weeks, the Mets will turn to Jose Lobaton to start Friday's game. He hit a career-high 16 homers and slugged a career-best.443 in 112 games. They called up Nido, the team's top catching prospect, from Double-A Binghamton on Wednesday after placing d'Arnaud on the disabled list.

"I didn't say a word for about a minute". Tommy John recovery times aren't quite as lengthy for position players as for pitchers, so d'Arnaud could be back at the start of next season.

A veteran of five-plus seasons, d'Arnaud missed significant time to injury in both 2015 and 2016.

Plawecki sustained the injury Wednesday night when he was hit by a pitch from the Marlins' Tayron Guerrero. A postgame X-ray was negative, but an MRI in NY on Thursday showed a hairline fracture.

His return date will be determined by the return of grip strength and pain tolerance.

Then again, the always-quippy GM's retort when asked for his definition of "very short-term" was far more telling before the Mets improved to 11-1 on the season.

The Mets said before Friday's game against Milwaukee that Plawecki was going to the DL, retroactive to Thursday.

The Mets also recalled outfielder Brandon Nimmo from Las Vegas on Friday and optioned reliever Jacob Rhame to Triple A.

Lobaton, a switch-hitter, batted 5 for 18 (.278) with two homers in nine postseason games past year.

"For me, it's big", Lobaton said. Nido hit.232 with eight homers and 60 RBI previous year at Double-A.
