KIYC: Finding what information Facebook knows about you

KIYC: Finding what information Facebook knows about you

Shortly before Zuckerberg testified before the Senate Commerce Committee, John Thune, the Republican chairman of the committee, said he knows "there are people who say we ought to regulate these social media platforms, [but] I'm not convinced that's the case". In fact, certain instances made it seem far more like a tortured five hour call with IT. But why does a picture of my 88-year-old dad show up on my own profile?

- Should Facebook be more proactive in protecting its users' data?

In response to Zuckerberg's suggestion that censorship affected "all political groups" on Facebook, Rep. Jeff Duncan pointed out that there were few complaints from left-wingers on the subject. And all of a sudden I start receiving advertisements for chocolate.

"We cannot have a society in which, if two people wish to communicate, the only way that can happen is if it's financed by a third person who wishes to manipulate them". You've said everyone controls their data, but you're collecting data on people who are not even Facebook users who have never signed a consent, a privacy agreement.

While Zuckerbergs answers generally hewed to the literal truth, they also tended to omit some key details.

The emails appear to contradict the duo's claim on the "Mornings on the Mall" radio show on Wednesday that Facebook had not tried to contact them.

Have you deleted your Facebook account in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal? So it's worth asking: In an era in which wealth and income inequality are glaringly persistent, should some technology companies continue to reap overwhelming profits while individuals on whose data they rely receive no compensation?

Despite the scary-sounding name, I don't think there is necessarily any malice or ill will in Facebook's creation and use of shadow profiles.

We need government oversight.

Facebook is often quite deliberate in its characterisations of "your data", rejecting the notion that it "owns" user data.

Still, Zuckerberg conceded in a press briefing prior to his recent testimonies in Washington, D.C that despite not noticing a significant drop in Facebook users, the recent scandals are "not good". That requires being just as well-informed as he is. They lined both sides of the sidewalk looking for those whose faces they had circled, laughing and occasionally leaning in to ask one of us out on a date or to one of their all-male social club parties.

To get there, many Congressmen and Congresswomen have some studying to do.

Equally, if not more important, we need to re-think how we interact with one another.

Once there, simply type "Cambridge Analytica" into the search bar at the top of the page, then click on the result that says "How can I tell if my information was shared with Cambridge Analytica?".
