Mr Mac Donncha participated in an Islamic conference about Jerusalem in Ramallah, organised by the religious affairs adviser to Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Micheál Mac Donncha narrowly avoided detention and expulsion by Israeli authorities when he landed at Ben Gurion Airport in the country.

The mayor of Dublin has entered the West Bank after a reported spelling error allowed him through Tel Aviv airport in defiance of a ban.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is also foreign minister, wrote on Facebook that he had instructed the ministry to hold a "clarification discussion" with Mac Donncha. It said that the conference in Ramallah was "explicitly" against Israel and had taken place on Holocaust Memorial Day.
