Laptops with SIM Card: Reliance Jio's next Sensation

Qualcomm, which is already working with Jio and Reliance Retail on 4G feature phones, is working on similar laptop-with-SIM-card models elsewhere.

Reliance Jio's entry into the ailing PC market is being hailed as a huge deal and could rejuvenate the lost interest in laptops.

After debuting with smartphones and later launching 4G feature phones and MiFi dongles in India, Reliance Jio's next bet is the prevalent laptop market in India. The company has held talks with United States chipmaker Qualcomm to bring out laptops running the Windows 10 operating system with an inbuilt cellular connection for the Indian market.

"The report quotes Miguel Nunes, Senior Director, Product Management, Qualcomm Technologies, saying, "...we have talked to Jio. Dubbed "Always Connected PCs", these devices are powered by Qualcomm processors and run on Windows 10. An official announcement will be made soon if the process gets successful.

Such connected laptops have slowly begun emerging over the past few months from brands like HP, Asus, and Lenovo.

No other telecom provider has such an enormous presence in consumer electronics as Reliance.

Imagine a laptop, embedded with a SIM card, a Jio 4G one, and you can Internet accessibility everywhere you go. For those unaware, Jio already offers multiple devices including JioPhone, JioFi, and Lyf smartphones. The idea is to provide connectivity and portability without being dependent on a dongle or Wi-Fi network.

Reliance is also reportedly in touch with domestic manufacturer Smartron to produce Snapdragon 835-running laptops with cellular connectivity. Reliance Jio knows about all kinds of devices which are accessing Jio's 4G data and hence knows the internet usage patterns, now this development will expand its reach to laptops as well which will help it in predictive analysis on how the data is being consumed. "It's new for the OEMs, new for the operators, and new for the channel".
