Playstation 5 Release Might Not Be Until 2020

Thanks to sources close to Sony and the gaming industry (via Kotaku's Jason Schreier), the general idea seems to be that a "PlayStation 5" won't see the light of day until at least 2020. Pachter believes Sony will most likely release the console in 2020.

"There is information about the PlayStation 5 floating around at both first- and third-party companies, but it's far more limited than it would be if the console's release was imminent". But it makes no sense.

This would have the benefit of full (backward and forward) compatibility, though as a downside the Xbox One X's CPU could prove to be a bottleneck for next-generation games.

Previous reports and rumors had originally pegged the release of the PlayStation 5 to be sometime this year.

"Over the past month, I've spoken to dozens of game developers, across a variety of disciplines and studios, about the next generation of consoles". Sony has also updated some of the games like The Last of Us Remastered, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare and Rachet & Clank to make use of the new PS4 Pro's hardware. Both of them said that the console will take 2019 at the earliest for release. Even developers at Sony's first-party studios had not been briefed on the existence of the PS5 yet, and these are the developers now working on games scheduled for 2019 and later.

"At some point, Sony's probably looked at every possible date", said the insider.

Last week, SemiAccurate claimed that Sony had shipped a large number of PS5 development kits to game developers.

How powerful will the PlayStation 5 be?

Earlier this year, it was also speculated that the future PlayStation console would move to more "procedural content". While it was previously rumored that dev kits for the PlayStation 5 had been sent out to developers, with this speculation suggesting that the PS5 would be released sooner rather than later, the console is instead more likely to launch in 2020 than it is in the next two years.

Meanwhile, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter told WCCFTech that there was "very low probability" of the PS5 releasing this year.
