16-year-old Manu Bhaker claims 10m pistol gold at CWG

The teenage shooter has always be a natural at sport, and took up various disciplines, including boxing, tennis and Thang-ta, a Manipuri martial art. Bhaker was dissuaded from pursuing boxing after her mother discovered that Manu had a swollen lip after one particular boxing session.

She claimed Gold in the 10m Air Pistol event for girls in the Khelo India School Games held earlier this year.

Bhaker created a new Commonwealth Games record after she scored 101.5 points in the first stage and then scored another 139.4 points in the elimination stage. Australia's Elena Galiabovitch took bronze with 214.9 to bring some cheer for the hosts.

Sidhu, who had also won silver at the Delhi CWG in 2010, was on the verge of elimination at a point but did well to make a recovery and win silver. Her concentration was unwavering and she held her nerve all through to continue her golden run. The seasoned Heena Sidhu staged a remarkable comeback to bag silver at the Belmont Shooting Centre.

Bhaker, still only 16 years of age, dominated the 10 metre Air Pistol final in her first-ever Commonwealth Games appearance, defeating veteran and compatriot Heena Sidhu by a margin of six-plus points.

In just two years since taking up shooting, Bhaker has marked her name in the India's list of firsts.

Earlier in the day, weightlifter Punam Yadav clinched a gold medal in the women's 69 kg weightlifting event.

India now ranks third in the medal tally with the nine medals.

It wasn't as if Bhaker, who grew up in Goria village in Haryana's Jhajjar district, was aimlessly drifting from one sport to another. And with the long list of accolades she's gained in the past couple of months, Bhaker has already set an example for others to follow.
