2 dead, including suspect, after shooting at Birmingham hospital, authorities say

Photo A gunman shot two hospital employees at the UAB Hospital-Highlands in Birmingham, Ala., before turning the gun on himself.

The hospital confirmed to CBS News that one of their employees was killed and other was shot. The second victim is being treated at Highlands.

The suspect was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, WBRC reported.

Birmingham police responded to an active shooter situation and say the shooter is down.

Lieutenant Williston said the police were reviewing employee records to determine whether the gunman was also a hospital employee.

After police determined the scene was secure, officers searched each room. reports paramedics were entering the building through the same-day surgery entrance.

The victims are believed to have been on the second floor.

When staff was led to UAB Police headquarters, a woman was said to have had a panic attack and needed to be examined by medics.

UAB students were asked to shelter in place but were given the all-clear by UAB around 7:40 p.m.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service Capt. Harold Watson said the shooting points to the need for more active shooting training for first responders and for the general public to be more aware of their surroundings. This post will be updated.
