Netflix's 'The Crown' Paid Its Queen Less Than Its Prince

Speaking during a panel about the series at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, they said that the difference in salary was apparently due to Smith's Doctor Who fame. The makers of The Crown have admitted that Claire Foy was paid less than the actor who played her husband.

She was also nominated at the BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards.

It has been announced that Olivia Colman will be playing Queen Elizabeth II, taking over the role from Claire Foy.

Despite winning a Golden Globe for her performance, Foy's salary was lower than that of Matt Smith as the young Duke of Edinburgh. Foy, meanwhile, was largely unknown in the states when she was cast as Queen Elizabeth.

Mackie said that going forward, all actresses to tackle the royal role will take home a fatter paycheck, though it's too late for Foy, who has been recast, along with the rest of her co-stars, going into Season 3.

The Netflix original series focused primarily on the monarch, Queen Elizabeth, played by 33-year-old Foy. Helena Bonham Carter takes over for Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret as new characters - including Princess Diana - will be introduced.

"We put that money on the screen", said Andy Harries, the chief executive of Left Bank, adding that 120 different costumes were created for the queen just for Season 2. "I think we were the first television series ever to change cast and continue, and we will change cast twice". The success carried on into the second season, with Foy bringing home another SAG Award and earning another Golden Globe nomination. "It's daunting but exciting and I hope it'll keep the series fresh and really of interest to people".

In January, Forbes reported that the 10 highest-paid male actors in Hollywood brought in a total of $488.5 million, while the 10 highest-paid women actors earned less than half of that total, with $172.5 million. Both actors were represented by the same agency.
