Dzeko hails 'patient' Roma after narrow last-16 win

Dzeko hails 'patient' Roma after narrow last-16 win

And with the clean sheet, Roma goalkeeper Alisson has yet to concede at the Stade Olimpico in the Champions League this season.

Bosnian Edin Dzeko scored the only goal at Stadio Olimpico in the 52nd minute, according to Ukrinform.

Cengiz Under's goal in the first leg last month ultimately proved crucial for Roma, but Dzeko was the hero on the night and also proved instrumental in Shakhtar defender Ordets being shown a straight red card with 12 minutes left.

Roma were subsequently able to see the game out for an aggregate score of 2-2, which saw them through to the quarter-finals thanks to Under's away goal in the first leg.

"The standing ovation is not for me but for everyone, we are deservedly in the quarter-finals", said Dzeko of the applause which accompanied him off the pitch.

"Roma started the season well, there was a period when things weren't going at their best and we could've done better in Serie A, but I feel we've had this black-out in every season and need to improve that". The Bosnian striker was then denied by the offside flag minutes later before Shakhtar had barely touched the ball.

"We took our chance to get the decisive goal and then defended all together". "Among the eight best sides in Europe and we push onto the next round".

Chances were few and far between, though, and a lack of cutting edge in the final third was ruthlessly punished by Dzeko seven minutes after half-time.

The sides have met five times in the Champions League before, with Shakhtar winning on five occasions. Shakhtar's game plan appeared to be working as they frustrated their hosts, but one incisive move was enough for the Serie A side to snatch it. Shakhtar were more than a match, though, and can leave the #UCL with their heads held high, as Roma look forward to Friday's draw.

Mallenco twice worked for the matches of Shakhtar in the Champions League in the 2014-2015 season, "miners" in the 1/8 finals of painted draw with Bayern (0:0), and in the autumn of previous year thanks to the double beat Bernard "Feyenoord" (2:1).

"We made a few too many mistakes in the first leg and they made the majority".
