Children's shoes at Capitol represent those killed in last 5 years

Thousands of pairs of shoes, representing the children killed by gun violence since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, are spread out at the U.S. Capitol on March 13, 2018 in Washington, DC.

A 19-year-old with a semi-automatic rifle killed 17 people at a high school in Florida on February 14, sparking rage among parents, students and educators.

Students across the country will walk out of their classrooms for 17 minutes to commemorate the 17 victims who lost their lives in the February 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

About 7,000 shoes were lined up for a memorial movement called "Monument for Our Kids". Prominent celebrities, including Bette Midler and Chelsea Handler, helped publicize the drive via social media. The figure used by Avaaz would amount to approximately 6,825 children killed by guns in that time period.

The event mirrors a similar display the group put on following the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris ahead of the Global Climate Summit.

The Parkland shooting was the deadliest school shooting since 26 - 20 students and six teachers - were killed in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. "Culture is changing in America right now".

Organizers of the memorial said the Parkland shooting was the catalyst for creating the memorial. The majority of Americans want gun control.

The protest was the latest movement from activists groups to call on lawmakers to take steps to curb rampant shooting incidents in US schools.
