Vikings have made opening overtures to Drew Brees' reps

While acquiring Brees would make Minnesota an instant contender for at least a season or two, it would be absolutely shocking to see the 39-year-old quarterback leave the New Orleans Saints.

Brees' agent, Tom Condon, can legally begin discussing his client with other teams as of noon ET Monday.

NFL Free Agency is officially underway as teams are now allowed to discuss contract numbers with player agents, and one player that might get a few calls is New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

With each day Brees and the Saints do not agree on a new deal, the likelihood he winds up elsewhere increases. Also, because of the complex way his contract was structured to help the Saints' salary cap in previous years, if Brees' contract voids it will count as $18 million in dead cap space for the Saints in 2018, according to Minnesota offers one of the most complete rosters in the National Football League on both sides of the ball that just earned a berth in the NFC Championship game. It's always been assumed Brees and New Orleans would find common ground on a new short-term deal with the club coming off its best season since winning the Super Bowl in 2009. Many would argue the Vikings entered their "Super Bowl window" last season, and the one thing missing from the roster now is a quality starting quarterback. Why not instead offer that money to Brees, a Super Bowl champion and future Hall-of-Famer who has shown no signs of decline?

The situation is worth monitoring as the legal tampering period arrives. As much as the Saints and Brees love each other, Condon and Saints general manager Mickey Loomis still don't ever want to be the guy who blinks first. Now that Brees and the Saints are on the brink of the moment where other teams can formally try to bogart him, anything can happen.
