Naxal attack in Sukma, 9 CRPF jawans killed and 6 injured

The deceased CRPF personnel are from the 212 battalion.

He said, the IED blast in Sukma is deeply distressing.

And citing figures provided in the Lok Sabha, he said there have been 122 violent attacks this year and 14 jawans and 12 civilians have been killed.

Around 8am this morning, 11 men of the elite Cobra forces, specially trained to tackle Maoist insurgency, were travelling from Kistaram to Paloda in Sukma, where an anti-Naxal operation was already going on.

At least nine personnel of the 212 Battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were killed in a powerful IED blast by Maoists in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday. However, no exchange of firing was reported in the aftermath of the fatal explosion. As per information received, 9 CRPF personnel attained martyrdom and 3 are injured.

Meanwhile confirming the attack, Special DG of Anti Naxal Operations in Chhattisgarh's Sukma, DM Awasthi said that the attack took place when the patrolling party was on its way to Palodi. "I pray for speedy recovery of the injured jawans".

The blast was followed by a heavy exchange of fire between security forces and Maoists in which the rebels also suffered casualties. The injured jawans are being taken to Raipur. He said that the Maoists had targeted security personnel because they are angry over the developmental work being carried out in the area.

Officials said Maoists, led by their elusive commander Hidma and his PLGA (Peoples' Liberation Guerrilla Army) battalion no. 1, could be behind the deadly attack.

The martyrs have been identified as Ajay Kumar Yadav, Jitendra Singh, Shabit Ku Sharma, Manoj Singh, RKS Tomar, Manoranjan Lenka, Dharmendra Singh, Chandra H.S. and Laxman.

He also added that einforcement was rushed to the spot and further details were awaited. Home Minister Rajnath Singh has expressed grief over the loss of lives of police personnel in Sukma blast.
