Kenya: Fall of Nasa looms as Raila 'snubs' meeting

NASA principals Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula, on Monday held a meeting to discuss issues of the coalition, specifically after a surprise meeting between Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

On behalf of the People's Assembly Organising Committee, Economist David Ndii said; "The two leaders have asked us to give them an opportunity to spearhead this process".

While announcing the formation of the People's Assemblies late past year, Odinga said the formation will be a broad based forum consisting of elected leaders and the leadership of other sectors of society in particular workers, civil society, religious leaders, women, youth and economic interest groups.

They said they only learnt of it via the media and demanded a blow-by-blow account of what transpired at Harambee House on Friday last week.

"He felt that talking directly to the President was the most practical thing to do, given the circumstances", said a source, who described the meeting as initially "tense" and devoid of the pleasantries that have characterised previous Nasa get-togethers.

These comments have cast a dark cloud over Monday's meeting.

The four met in Athi River, Machakos County.

The Jubilee leaders were also quick to allay fears that the new alliance between Kenyatta and Odinga presented a new political matrix in the 2022 elections.

The fall of Nasa is a culmination of a series of events that have rocked the coalition since January 30, when Mr Odinga was "sworn in" as the people's president in a ceremony skipped by the other principals.

"It's true our security has been restored", Junet said.

"It is the three principals who will have to sit and decide whether to incorporate Mr Odinga", he said.

But Mr Odinga defended his move, saying it was the best option given the challenges facing the Opposition in recent days.
