Hearthstone: Announcing The Witchwood

Hearthstone: Announcing The Witchwood

Themed around the haunted city of Gilneas, players will be able to acquire 135 brand new cards in order to fight off the spirits of the Witchwood. The new Rush attribute will allow cards to act immediately upon being played, but only to attack other minions, differentiating it from the Charge mechanic.

Deceptively simple in design but epically engaging, Hearthstone will be instantly accessible to players regardless of their familiarity with Warcraft or collectible card games.

Hearthstone just entered the Year of the Raven, and now we know what to expect from its first expansion. The heroes all have a unique hero power and their own cards to help build new strategies, and each encounter you clear nets you loot in the form of cards to improve your deck for the remainder of the hunt.

In the Hearthstone team's adorable lost-in-the-woods promo video, they also showed off a couple of the new legendary-rarity cards that promote innovative deck archetypes. Aside from winning new cards, players will be able to round out their collections by purchasing new card packs or disenchanting some of their existing cards to craft the ones they're missing.

Hearthstone's next expansion is a witch-y affair that brings a chunk of news cards and another dungeon run-style mode to the game. "They can not attack heroes until the turn after they enter play, however". There are also new Worgen cards - my personal favorite - which will swap their health and attack values each turn, and minions that reward you for building a deck using only cards that have either an even or odd cost.

A new free Monster Hunt single player mode, simiar to Kobolds & Catacombs' Dungeon Run, which will challenge players to eight continuous hard battles, leading into a big boss fight. Blizzard will release more details on Monster Hunts in the weeks to come. "Each time, it'll add a ghostly copy of the card back to your hand that disappears at the end of your turn".
