Fitbit announces Versa, its latest smartwatch fitness tracker

Fitbit announces Versa, its latest smartwatch fitness tracker

You can pre-order it right now on the Fitbit site. The 39mm device is slightly wider than the smallest 36mm Apple Watch, and Fitbit could still stand to slim down the bezels surrounding the touchscreen (while ditching the Fitbit logo on the chin). The lack of Global Positioning System feels like a big omission-the beauty of the latest breed of smartwatches is how they don't need to be tethered to a phone-but if it means a cheaper watch that lasts longer it might be survivable.

Back in August of a year ago, Fitbit officially unveiled its new Ionic smarwtach, which turned out to be pretty good.

The software still needs some work, however. Fitbit promises it won't send you an obvious, embarrassing notification about it. Although Apple declines to share exact sales figures (Watch is listed under its Other category during its quarterly reports), analysts claim it is the industry's best-selling smartwatch. It's available now on Amazon and Fitbit.com for $269.95, and comes in three different color options.

The Fitbit Versa is the company's effort to reach a larger audience with their devices - with a particular focus on women.

Fitbit also introduced the Fitbit Ace, a smartband aimed at kids 8 and older. The more rounded design should be giving you Pebble Time Steel flashbacks (Fitbit acquired Pebble a while back).

Overall, it's an all-around great fitness tracker, especially considering its sub-$150 price point.

Since it's designed for children, it doesn't have the same fitness prompts as the company's adult-oriented trackers. But what if you're looking for a device similar to the Alta, but can't go without a heart rate sensor?

The Fibit Ace will track steps, sleep, activity minutes, and can connect to a smartphone. Apple has always been lauded for their design and aesthetics, so it's no wonder that Fitbit is taking a note out of their playbook with the release of the Fitbit Versa. The Fitbit app logs your weight, sleep, workouts, heart rate, food intake and, now, your periods; it then gives you insights based on analyzing all of that data.

This is all part of Fitbit's push to expand into new demographics. That's because Fitbit gobbled up a portion of Pebble-its IP and engineers-to smarten up its own fitness trackers and compete with Apple.

The Fitbit Flex 2 is a well-designed fitness tracker with a lot of neat features that serves as an introduction to Fitbit's excellent software and ecosystem. A key aim of the Versa is to "empower" people to understand their health and take action on it.

This Fitbit device isn't flawless, though.

It boasts a battery life of up to four days compared to the Apple Watch's 18 hours.

"We launched Fitbit Ionic, our first entry, which allows us to participate in this fast-growing segment", Park said at a media event in New York City.

The Blaze might not be the best Fitbit device out there, but it's still darn good at a handful of things.

Fitbit on Tuesday unveiled its newest Apple Watch competitor that sells for just $199.99.
