The agency alleged irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds of about Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was Union finance minister. P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom.

The 1995 death of biscuit baron Rajan Pillai was also cited, as Karti Chidambaram said he did not want to be exposed to attacks.

Although the Delhi High Court had granted Karti relief, by barring his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate till March 20, the barring of arrest was not applicable in the case of an arrest by the CBI. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody. "He [Karti Chidambaram] can not be treated different from other accused persons and can not be allowed to be kept in separate prison", the court said.

The editor had posed a question as to whether Justice Muralidhar, who was part of the bench which had passed the order granting protection to Karti Chidambaram, was a junior of former UPA minister and senior advocate P Chidambaram.

Karti's counsel pleaded to the Special CBI court that he may be lodged in a separate jail inside Tihar as he may face threats from under trials and fellow prisoners. "Some of the accused related to those cases are lodged in Tihar so I apprehend a great threat to my security", he said. We are outraged with the CBI stand on Karti's plea. Karti will be now kept in remand till March 24.

Karti Chidambaram was produced before Delhi's Patiala House Court on Monday after his three-day CBI custody ended. The court denied Karti's request for home food in the jail.

Meanwhile, Karti's chartered accountant S Bhaskararaman, who is now in jail in a case filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), has moved the court for anticipatory bail in the CBI case of INX Media.
