OnePlus 5/5T to get Android 8.1 update soon

OnePlus has announced the Android 8.1 Oreo support via the OxygenOS Open Beta 6 for OnePlus 5 users with additional new features and bug fixes. It's also worth noting that this update brings support for OP5T users to migrate application backup data using the OnePlus Switch app. The latest device by the company, OnePlus 5T beta users start getting Android 8.1 Oreo update along with February security patch.

OnePlus has been regular with its software updates, and notably rolled out Android Oreo 8.0 to the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T well before the new version made it to the new OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T.

If you are a OnePlus 5 user on the beta program, there is some good news. Coolest one, the Phone app gets an update that includes a new auto pickup gesture, which can allow the user to pick up the incoming call by the raising phone (such type of gestures were introduced by Samsung, since Galaxy S5). It also comes with general bug fixes and improvements along with more clock styles for the ambient display.

After the software update, OnePlus 5T users get a new gaming mode and also add new optimizations in gaming mode for immersive gaming experience including power saving and pausing adaptive brightness. The update will be available over-the-air (OTA) for those users who have already flashed a previous Open Beta build. The update weighs at about 1.6GB and the first time Beta testers have to manually download and flash the update. A quick look at the replies in the forum thread for this Open Beta shows that users find the Fruit Phone X-like gesture navigation to be much improved.

Once the.zip file is copied to the phone, the user has to reboot their OnePlus 5T into recovery mode. OnePlus says users should wait for sometime while the selected build is updated to their phone. OnePlus earlier this month rolled out Oxygen OS 5.0.4, the stable version of its software, for both the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. As of now, there is no word on when the company would roll out the stable build of the software update.
