Major League Baseball free agency rumors: Jake Arrieta signs 3-year deal with Phillies

2015 National League Cy Young Award victor Jake Arrieta is nearing a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Jon Heyman of Fan Rag Sports. The report meshes with what USA Today's Bob Nightengale said earlier on Sunday, which is that Arrieta is expected to sign a contract this week and the Phillies are considered the favorite. It's hard to top that sort of success and dominance, but Jake Arrieta has come down to earth and has done so quickly.

The Phillies have been connected to Arrieta going back to the winter meetings.

Arrieta, 32, was 14-10 with a 3.53 ERA for the Chicago Cubs last season.

It remains to be seen if Arrieta will be ready in time to join the Phillies rotation to start the season.

The timing makes sense, as the first domino finally dropped in the free agency impasse as Lance Lynn signed a one-year, $12 million deal with the twins.

In signing Arrieta, it is yet to be known if right-hander Aaron Nola will remain as the Phillies' Opening Day starter, away against the Atlanta Braves on March 29 at SunTrust Park.

Also, a veteran presence to anchor the young-guns would go along way, helping the Phillies moving forward. Nick Pivetta, Ben Lively, Zach Eflin, and Mark Leiter are all battling for a rotation spot as well.
