Fiorentina fans pay tribute to Davide Astori in Benevento win

The match between Fiorentina and Benevento saw a break in play during the 13th minute to honor the late Davide Astori.

The funeral for Astori, who was said by authorities in Udine to have died of a cardiac arrest ahead of last Sunday's scheduled game against Udinese, was held in the city on Thursday amid a huge outpouring of grief from fans, players and coaches.

The Viola captain and Italy worldwide died in his sleep last Saturday, which led to an outpouring of grief from the football community.

Flags and banners were displayed throughout the stadium bearing Astori's name, though one of the most poignant tributes came in the 13th minute of the game.

Play was then halted in the 13th minute - Astori's jersey number - with players giving him an ovation that lasted an entire minute.

Fiorentina returned to action this afternoon for the first time since their captain's untimely passing as they took on Benevento at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, and the club's players and supporters showed their love for their former captain with an emotional tribute before kick-off.

Fittingly, Fiorentina went on to register a 1-0 victory, the only goal coming from Vitor Hugo, the 20-year-old Brazilian centre-back who came into the team to replace Astori.
